The Everwatch Knights is an old order of the Silver Flame, most popular because of Saint Estered, and three others. Currently, the Everwatch Knights are an honorary order, a loose title taken by Silver Flame knights and templars who follow the Everwatch Knights’ code.
The code is as follows:
Never betray your trust. Be vigilant. Stand, wait, and watch carefully. Be fair and diligent in the conduct of your orders. Protect the weak, poor, injured, and young, and do not sacrifice them for others or yourself. Anticipate attacks and be ready. Know your foes. Care for your weapons so they may perform their duties when called upon. Careful planning always defeats rushed actions in the end. Always obey orders, providing those orders follow the dictates of Helm and honor the Flame. Demonstrate excellence and purity of loyalty in your role as a guardian and protector.
The Vigilant Eyes of the Silver Flame
The Everwatch Knights are legendary because of its four great heroes, titled the Vigilant Eyes of the Silver Flame, during the time of the Silver Purge, which began in 832 YK.
- Jeremiah of the Purge,
- Estered of the Sword,
- Cadre of Flamekeep, and
- Oralius Lycansbane
The leader of the Everwatch was Jeremiah, first son of the god-like knight templar, Helm. He was said to radiate silvery light wherever he traveled, both his armor and spirit enchanted by holy magic. His touch was enough to sicken and nauseate weaker lycan heretics, and his blood was poison, a drop able to kill half a dozen. He seemed to disappear after Thrane withdrew its military forces in 880 YK. Many say he continued to stay in the Eldeen Reaches to free every war prisoner he lost, or simply to fight until he was killed.
Saint Estered was one of the four great heroes of the Silver Purge, in a now-gone company known as the Everwatch Knights . She was an accomplished artificer and alchemist. She was born approximately 827 YK and was lost in battle in 865 YK. Estered’s body was never recovered, but it is said that her remains were interred in the city of Wellspring, located in Northern Aundair.Because of her bravery, her leadership, and her works, she was mourned as a Sword Saint of the Silver Flame. Hundreds of Lycans and their allies fell by her magical blade.
Oralius Lycansbane is said to have become immune to the poisonous Belladonna, one of the few cures for lycanthropy. Many say that he had to fight lycanthrope as a child, and lost his lover in such manner. That said, he was both a heartless slayer of true lycans, and a staunch human ally of flame-fearing shifters. He only wore light leathers, valuing his agility and sharp aim. Most reports state that there was never even a scratch or war wound on Oralius, over all but the bloodiest of battles. Even then, a single scratch on Oralius’ war gear conveyed the difficulty, viciousness, and mortality rate of a battle. He was killed in 880YK, in an explosion in western Aundair that killed over 200 lycans and lycan allies, during a battle that killed nearly a thousand more. According to legend, his wife, a beautiful raven-haired woman with deep black eyes bore him a single son.
Cadre of Flamekeep is an argued topic amongst scholars. While most agree of his presence and life, according to some written accounts, he was not human, but of Elven descent. One of the reasons for argument is his elven title, Ravenwing. Nonetheless, Elves and half-elves of the Flame revere Saint Cadre. Like Jeremiah, he disappeared after the purge.
Three others were considered honorary members of the Vigilant Eyes.
Thane Daeril of Mror, Dwarven Thane of the Titankeg clan, the Mountain King, assisted in the Karrnathi campaign, is said to have traveled even further, with the Vigilant Eyes. His men were a welcome addition to Jeremiah’s army, and he, himself, was a moving mountain, unstoppable and insurmountable. Dwarves would say of him, that the he was a mountain king of yesteryear, he was a legend of today.
Krieg Throatcrusher, Sahuagin Baron, assisted the Silver Purge in all assaults near coastal cities, especially in the Demon Wastes. Baron Krieg’s personal valor, and that of his army and allies, brought terror to the waterborne lycans, and further.
Bennin Silverclaw, Shifter Templar, assisted in the campaign on the Eldeen Reaches. A hero among shifters of the Flame, her claws were coated with magical silver, and her tracking abilities as a hunter-killer were peerless. Her final expedition was just after separating from the Vigilant Eyes, taking several hundred templars to the largest cult stronghold in the Wastes. Surviving an ambush, she lead the survivors on, but slew the leaders himself in her final battle. It is rumored that she may have been the lover of Oralius Lycansbane.
